Dembele staying focused after ´genius´ praise from Pochettino

Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele has shrugged off being described as a genius of football by manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine compared the 30-year-old to Diego Maradona, Jay-Jay Okocha and Ronaldinho, with Dembele having starred in recent Premier League games against Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, as well as a 2-2 draw away to Juventus in the Champions League.

Former Spurs striker Les Ferdinand told Omnisport Dembele should have developed earlier and earned a move to Real Madrid to join Gareth Bale.

But despite Dembele hitting the headlines for his fine form in Spurs 14-game unbeaten run in all competitions, the Belgium international is keen to concentrate on his football.

Everybody wants to be appreciated and if it s the manager w…

´The club needs me´ – Silva expecting to pen new Chelsea deal in next few days

Thiago Silva expects to sign a new contract to extend his stay at Chelsea in the next few days .

The centre-back has been a key player for the Blues since joining as a free agent in August 2020 following the expiry of his contract at Paris Saint-Germain.

Silva signed an initial one-year deal with the club and helped Chelsea to win the Champions League in the 2020-21 campaign, after which he signed an extension until the end of this season.

With less than six months remaining on that contract, the 38-year-old revealed both he and Chelsea want him to stay with the club, and he anticipates putting pen to paper on a fresh deal very soon.

We are talking about it, Silva told ESPN. Everything will probably happen in the next few days.

My intention, and…

How Rooney reached 200 Premier League goals – the numbers behind the milestone

Wayne Rooney continued his habit of scoring milestone goals against Manchester City when he became only the second player to score 200 times in the Premier League.

The 31-year-old striker gave Everton the lead in the 35th minute against Pep Guardiola s side on Monday to join Alan Shearer as a double centurion, and the data on how he reached 200 does not make happy reading for City fans.

Supporters of Newcastle, Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers might also want to look away as we reveal some of the key stats from Rooney s staggering goalscoring feat.

MILESTONE GOALS

Rooney s 200th Premier League goal was one of 153 scored with his right foot and one of 173 netted from inside the penalty area. It arrived almost five years after he scored his 150t…

Both halves over 1.5 is a wager that merges halves and goals into a single bet. The punters have two options to pick: Yes or No. Essentially, the bettors predict if two or more goals will be scored/ or not in each half.

Which team scores the goals is irrelevant.

In other words, for a Yes pick, yo…

Sir Kenny Dalglish to receive Lifetime Achievement Award at SPOTY

Sir Kenny Dalglish will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2023.

Dalglish, who scored 167 times in 320 appearances, lifting nine trophies for Celtic before he moved to Liverpool for a British record transfer fee at the time of £440,000, will be handed the award on Tuesday.

Dalglish would go on to become a Liverpool great and helped the club retain the European Cup against Club Brugge at Wembley in 1978 by scoring the only goal of the game.

Regarded by many at Anfield as ‘King Kenny’ and Liverpool’s greatest ever footballer, he remains the only player to score more than 100 league goals in both Scotland and England.

Dalglish insisted he would not have received this award without the help of those ar…

Senegal v Algeria: Focus on collective rather than Mane, Mahrez

Sadio Mane and Riyad Mahrez will go head to head at the Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday, but the Senegal and Algeria coaches are focused on their team collectives.

Mane is back from suspension for Senegal, while Algeria s Mahrez is again set to lead the way as the two sides hope to build on opening wins against Tanzania and Kenya respectively.

But while there is much excitement about the involvement of two Champions League superstars, the coaches are less interested in an individual tussle.

Asked about Mahrez, Senegal boss Aliou Cisse told a pre-match news conference: There s no anti-Mahrez plan or similar for [Sofiane] Feghouli or [Yacine] Brahimi. They re all good players.

Of Mane, he added: The return of Sadio Mane can bring us more, he is one of ou…

Mourinho´s United rant recalls unhappy Madrid demise

According to Jose Mourinho s dictionary of life , people with a lot of ideas are either idealists or idiots.

As such, writing an opinion piece on the Manchester United manager s recent musings probably qualifies as a fool s errand, but Omnisport s Dom Farrell has done just that.

Here are his thoughts on Friday s remarkable news conference.

Jose Mourinho s attempts at damage control in the hours and days following Wednesday s meek Champions League exit at the hands of Sevilla – not dissimilar, one would imagine, to how a pyromaniac might approach a job with the fire brigade – show he is increasingly ill-suited to the biggest jobs in world football.

The 55-year-old finest achievements came with Porto at the start of this century, Chelsea betw…

Liverpool 4-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers: Five things to note as champions hit Wolves hard

Liverpool made easy work of Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield in the 11th round of the Premier League on Sunday evening. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in the 24th minute, Georginio Wijnaldum scored his first goal of the season in the 58th, Joel Matip headed in the third in the 67th, and Nelson Semedo diverted low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold past his own goalkeeper in the 78th to set the final score at 4-0.

Champions stay calm through turbulence

Liverpool are weathering the storm that s perhaps the best way to describe the way the Reds title defence has been going. There have been shaky moments and questionable performances not least in that 7-2 defeat away to Aston Villa in early October as well as notable player absences through injuries, but they simply haven t all…

Liverpool 2-1 Aston Villa: Alexander-Arnold strikes late as Reds finally win at Anfield again

Liverpool left it late to secure a first Premier League win at home in 2021, with Trent Alexander-Arnold s superb stoppage-time strike downing Aston Villa 2-1 at Anfield.

The Reds rallied from a goal down to secure three crucial points in terms of the top-four battle, while the result is also a timely boost with a Champions League second leg against Real Madrid coming up in midweek.

Ollie Watkins – who scored a hat-trick in a stunning 7-2 win for his side when Liverpool visited Villa Park early in the season  gave the visitors a half-time advantage on Merseyside, his left-footed shot squeezing underneath Alisson.

Roberto Firmino had a potential equaliser ruled out by the video assistant referee before the interval, but Mohamed Salah scored the Reds …
